Check Your Fuel Fill Cap!

by Peter Cockle

I had a problem last season with a fuel bug which caused my engine to stop 15 miles out in a windless English Channel at dusk in the middle of the shipping lanes. Just what you need. I limped into a French port and temporarily fixed the problem.

Shakedown! - Tips for the new C36 Owner (or any new boat owner)

You've ordered a new boat, shipped it to your location, it's been prepped at the boatyard or dealer, and now it needs a shakedown. "A shakedown?" you ask. You have to make sure everything is installed the correctly - some of these items are the factory's responsibility - some are your boatyard's or dealer's. Makes no difference whose fault it is, really -- it's just that certain things need to be checked. This is a list of things you need to check before you leave your boatyard...

Fuel Tank Replacement

by Thom Reeves and Doug Smith

After we had a wonderful time at the National Regatta in Newport the last weekend in August, we and 4 other Catalina 36s traveled to Block Island on Monday morning. After tying up at Block Island Boat Basin we started getting ready for a 6 pm cocktail party. It was impressive seeing those 5 Catalina 36s neatly in a row, almost like at the regatta in Newport. As Doug and I got ready for the cocktail party Doug remarked that he smelled diesel fuel when he opened up the cabinet door under the galley sink. This was not really new to us because we have had a previous incident with a leaking Racor fuel filter.

A Better Fix for Leaking Portlights

by Chris Gregory

Since commissioning my C36 in May I've been battling those Lewmar portlights and their leaks. These are the four that open, not the fixed ones in the hull. The temptation is, of course, to pop the plug off of the hatch dog and tighten the screw to add tension. This can make things worse, especially since it's important that both be more or less equal. One problem is that, due to the angle of the portlight, water tends to pool in the bottom.

Cleaning Tips from Sailors

In summer 2000, SailNet C36 maillist members shared tips for a variety of cleaning needs. Those tips were collected and published here for convenient reference.
