Catalina 36 Upgrades by Owners
by Rodd Collins
Former C36 owner, Rodd Collins, has put together an OUTSTANDING website with a collection of boat related projects, inluding:
Allan Rex writes in with this upgrade for a cockpit table.
If anyone so desires and has some skill, they can build their own cockpit table using SS hardware from Edson. Attached are the schematics I used.
Some photos of the finished product can be viewed at Carina Upgrades.

After reading an article in one of the glossy sailing magazines a few years ago, I decided that I wanted to follow the author's advice and add a second, smaller bilge pump to Julandra. I wanted to minimize the amount of "backwash" that flowed back into the bilge after the pump turned off, and I wanted a smaller pump that would take care of the nuisance amounts of water in the bilge.

We were floating behind our boat during a Fleet 15 raft up and one of the other owners mentioned that the stern rail on our MkI is just like the stern rail on his C30. He modified it by cutting out part of the lower rail and putting in a couple of 90 degree fittings with a short stanchion to brace it. I made the change this past weekend. This will make it much easier to get into the boat without having to step over the lower rail. See photos below.

This picture shows the details of the netting attachment - paracord laced through the netting and around the lifeline, also around stanchions - and the sinnet Judy made at the gates. Its a simple, double square knot sinnet made from 2 doubled lengths of 1/4" nylon braid, incorporating netting and lifelines.

What follows is a brief description of the work undertook to install a vertical windlass on a MKI Catalina 36.
The Quick Antares Windlass was chosen for several reasons:
Attached below is a very detailed article from Fred Jackson describing his alternator upgrade.

As many have posted over the winter, I too refinished my companionway steps of my C36 2164. I encountered the same problems as others, with splotches where it seems as though the finish did not absorb evenly. After I finally got the finish looking adequate, I took the suggestion of another list posting from last winter, where the author used inserted non skid pieces, after routing out the steps.

One of the great things about our boats is the chance to make improvements. In some cases the factory economized to save money over the hundreds of boats they deliver or the previous owner had a great idea that doesn’t jibe with your way of doing things.
These three changes have significantly improved the plumbing system on Southern Comfort, a 2000 model MKII. This started as a pump and head upgrade with the manifold change being necessitated by the need for space but that turned out to be one of the most useful features of the upgrade.

Bilge pump failure? Maybe, but an important item, one that's often overlooked, is the bilge pump float switch. Mine stopped working last summer, sometime in September Estimated life? 4 to 5 years in salt water.
