Yes, this normal. I think with monitoring, paralleling batteries on a
cruise would be fine if you have a backup way of starting the engine.
I have a portable jump starter, but better would be a dedicated
starting battery.

If you had no way of sending the charging current to only one battery,
a bad battery could take all of the charge from the alternator. I
guess in an emergency one could always remove the cables from the
battery to remove it from the charge.

I don't know if all 36 Catalina's are like this, I know my 32
wasn't. But my alternator (not the charger) will only charge the bank
that the switch is on. In other words if I have the selector set to 1,
battery #2 will not charge from the alternator. The only way I can
get both batteries to charge is with the switch in the both
position. This is not the case with the AC charger, both batteries
will charge no matter what the position of the selector switch.
Consequently when I sail for the day I always leave the switch in both
so that the batteries age together. If I am on an
extended cruise I will use one bank at a time and monitor both the bank
voltage and accumulated amp hour drain on the Link 10.
in theory you will divide the load equally between the two banks. The

exactly equal and I think that could influence the division of the
