[C36IA] Transmission Oil Change

I really think its something a certified marine transmission person should do unless you were very very mechanically inclined......
This is being sent from my handheld - I apologize for the brevity

Tom
Thanks for the web site. Caprice has 1 3/8 inch in reverse and over 2 inches in forward at the transmission. The clamp appears to be tight with no slippage. Are the washers replaceable by a mechanic or do you think a new trannie is in my near future?

It could be a number of things

Maybe your gear shift lever linkage is loose or the "throw" into forward isn't moving enough for the tranny to engage

I would go through and make sure you have at least full 30mm (1.18 inch) throw in both directions from nuetral -- go here for the proceedure - http://www.c36ia.com/node/1255

Maybe the clamp down on the bar that holds the end of the cable has moved and allows it to go ok in reverse and on the edge going forward

If its not that your tranny has some "cone" washers and bearing thrust washers that might be wearing out and loosing their "spring"

As I mentioned below I changed my transmission oil on Tuesday. After putting in the proper amount of oil I checked the level and checked the oil level again after I ran the engine.

Yesterday, Friday, was the first time since then that I moved Caprice. When I went to start up the engine I noticed I had accidentally left the gear shift in forward. I moved the gear shift to neural and started the engine. I put her in forward and she did not move. I increased the engine speed, she did not move and I could not see any prop wash. I slowed the engine down and shifted into neutral then reverse and forward a few times with the same results. I made sure I was pushing the shift lever firm enough to work. Caprice did not move.

I shut the engine down went below and checked the transmission for oil leaks. Seeing none I unscrewed the transmission dip stick, wiped it off and placed in back into the transmission without screwing it in and checked the oil level, The oil level was right at the mark. I screwed the dip stick back in and stared the engine. As the engine was running I went back down to the engine/ transmission area looked over everything and it appeared normal.

I went back up to the cockpit, put the gear shift into forward and Caprice, which was now tied loosely, started forward. I put her in reverse and she started moving backward. I put her back into forward and I could see the prop wash. Next we untied her and went for an hour long ride in the canals and the transmission worked fine.

My question is, Why did Caprice not go into gear when I first tried leaving the dock? Does it have anything to do with the fact that I shifted her back into neutral without the engine running before I started the engine?

I recently changed out the fluid in our transmission. Since I had forgotten my pump hoses at home, I improvised in the field:
I had a clean sprayer bottle on board and used the tube and spray top (without the bottle attached) to spray out the fluid into a cup. The thin tube was able to reach the fluid just fine.

It was a little awkward to reach, but I made it work and my tranny is happier!

I can only get a very small plastic container under the transmission drain and the pump I use to drain the engine oil does not have a small enough probe to fit in the upper plug hole.

A few years ago I had a cancer operation. For several months after the operation I had to flush my bladder using a self inserted 16 inch catheter with a 2 ounce syringe. (Not fun ) If you ever seen one of these apparatuses you would know what I am talking about. The other day as I was sitting on the head it dawned on me that this apparatus would be perfect for sucking the oil out of the transmission. So I tried it and it works perfectly.

My hurth transmission has a drain plug on the port side. With so little oil, i simply put a plastic container under and let the oil drain.
				Good luck.

You pump it out the same way you pump out engine oil. Use a different hose to your pump dedicated to just pumping transmission fluid. That way there should be no cross contamination.

How is the transmission oil collected when draining for a transmission oil change.
