Subject: [C36IA] Catalina Island - Yacht Club newsletter

Greetings -
thought this great group would find this of interest:

I have attached our yacht club's June 2009 "Sparkler" newsletter, 16-pgs,
for the "Fourth of July Yacht Club", on Catalina Island, adjacent to Two
Harbors, Catalina Island, CA.

I know you are asking, what a weird name for a yacht club.
The reason is historical:

The Banning Bros (of So CA railroad fame) owned the 25 mile-long Catalina
Island in the 1800's, prior to be sold to Mr Wrigley (aka chewing gum). The
Banning's desired the west end of the island over the now-more-crowed Avalon
east end. So they built their home at Two Harbors (aka "The Isthmus"),
overlooking both sides of the island (it's only a few hundred yards between
the front and back sides at the Isthmus), which all of us So CA boaters know
as the "Banning House" - the only place to stay on the West End, other than
a boat or camping
.
The Banning's tradition was to spend their Fourth of July weekends in the
small adjacent cove, thus the name Fourth of July Cove...from which we
derive our yacht club name from 36 years ago.

Our yacht clubs moto: "Thirty-six years of tradition, unhampered by
progress"

Take a look at the attached 16-pg pdf newsletter I put together, as well as
took nearly all the photos with my new Canon 5D-MkII.

ps: none of the members have even seen this yet, as the full-color edition
is being printed right now, tomorrow I have to stick labels and stamps on
175 copies!!!
