If you have a windlass your windlass specially one that handles chain the
manufacturer needs to tell you what chain type and rode and line you should
use.

I have question about the size of rode and chain.
I have been told to use 5/8 rode. The Don Casey library says to us ½ rode
(1/8 for every 9 feet of boat length) for a 36 boat. The library also
says to not oversize the rode. An oversized rode will decrease stretch.
I have been told to use 5/16 high strength chain. The Don Casey library
says to use chain that is half the thickness of the rode. It does not
specify regular or high strength.
Do I compromise on 9/16 rode? Do I buy 5/16 chain? Unfortunately, I have
relative new ¼ chain from a previous boat.
What do you all have?

Bill,
I have a Harken, original equipment, circa 1984.
I do rinse the drum by aiming a stream of fresh water at the drum which I
thought would rinse the bearings. I need to look more closely to see where
I'd direct a stream straight up the forestay under the drum.
I'm off today for a 2 day trip around Catalina on my friend's C380. Plan to
check out his newly installed Raymarine C70. Lots of fun buttons to learn
to push. And wow, have the prices on that product dropped dramatically in
the last few months. A new version must be imminent.
Thanks,
Arnold

Arnold,
It is also a good idea to rinse out the bearing on your self
furler drum. While you are at it. The newer ones have flush holes. The
older ones you must direct a stream straight up the forstay under the drum.

Bill,
Most excellent advice, thank you.
I have, on past occasions done so, but neither I nor the PO have done as you
have so thoroughly described.
