I believe there is something similar in Stamford Harbor, just north
of Brewer's East marina.

Keith,
If you are referring to the Hurricane Barrier it was constructed after Carol
in 1954. If you look at a chart you will notice that the Bay becomes
narrower as it proceed North. In a hurricane if the wind is out of the
South, and depending on the tides, the wind will push a storm surge up to
Providence.

Bob,
That was such a fast moving storm as it came up the Atlantic coast close to
70 MPH and hit directly the
east end of Long Island and then into New England. In NYC they hardly knew a
storm was so close while
out in the Hamptons (East End of Long Island), was heavily hit. Up in
Providence, RI the water damage
was so extensive they built a storm wall much like what they also built in
Stamford, Conn.

Hi Keith & Bill:
I was 12 when the '38 hurricane came by New Rochelle, NY. In fact, I was out
in my outboard-powered skiff during most of the day. Inland at the western
end of Long Island Sound the wind and water wasn't too bad. BUT, when I
finally came in for the day the docks were floating a good 15 to 20 feet
higher than normal. I ran my skiff right through the doors of the boat house
that housed all the lockers for the people who had boats there.
That was also where Hudson Park was located and the water was about 3 feet
deep on the roadway. Being a kid, I just kept on running around till I hit
the water fountain and broke the shear pin on the prop and had to row back
to the boathouse. I never had so much fun again, darn it.

Hi Bill,
I've been up in Providence, RI dropping off my daughter at Brown University
and there are those old buildings
that show the high-water mark of the "nameless" 1938 Hurricane. The surge in
some parts of Providence was over
30 feet high and the storm caused boats to be found miles inland...

Bill,
I was only 11 in 1954 but I remember that we were without power for at least
a week. Providence was under about 6-7 feet of water. Many of the older
buildings in the City have Plaques indicating the high water mark.

I remember Carol. We were in Maine. I remember the whole house would
actually lift up in the wind. We hid in the kitchen behind the bureau.
The worst Hurricane in my memory. Trees blown down all over. Highway was
blocked for a couple weeks.

Chic,
Carpe Ventum's home is a Town Mooring field, Allen Harbor, less than 1 mile
from the runway at the Quonset Airport.I don't know if you have ever heard
the term "Quonset Huts" but they received their name from those constructed
at the Quonset Naval Base.
Quonset as well as Newport, which is across the Bay from us, were major
staging areas during WWII . In fact, during the war they had retractable
metal nets strung across the Bay to protect the ships from Japanese
submarines. They still had Aircraft carriers at Quoset in the early mid
60's.

Bill,
The Air Show is 6/27 and 6/28. The Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds
will both be there. We usually watch it from Allen Harbor because the Harbor
is only about a mile from the runway. Thursday and Friday are also good days
because they are usually rehearsing. On Thursday/ Friday you could anchor
off Quonset and watch the practice. However, I would avoid this area on
Sat./Sun.because there are hundreds of boats out there.

Bill,
Yes I am one of the founding members in the "put the water
in the fuel tank club" .
We are an international organization.
Don't feel bad. You will get the fuel smell out. When I
put water in the fuel tank I had diesel all over the back cabin and the
floor of the galley. I should have pumped out the fuel down before I
removed the vent cover from the tank. Out came diesel all over the place.
That was back when the boat was one month old.
On the fuel filter. The first time I changed it I had an
awful time. My problem was the engine would not start and the fuel would
not flow. It turned out that the drain valve on the sight bowl was not
closed and it was sucking air. Unfortunately you got the the fuel to flow.
Also what should be an easy job for me was a bear. That filter does not
come off easy. The reason is after I complained to the filter company is
that Diesel causes o rings to swell making the filter very difficult to get
off. You need the biggest filter wrench you can find.
After that experience I got a vacuum gage meter. I got the
idea from the Senator. When the filter starts to plug it will start to
show a vacuum. So far it shows nothing. When it gets in the yellow
area I will change it. The filters are rated at about 600 hours. What do
we do? About 60 or less hours a season.
I hope to get over the Wickford this week. My son is busy
"pimping" up the boat as he calls it. Sterio, Flat screen TV, inverter have
gone in. He is putting in a holding tank monitor. He put in a 1800
watt inverter?? I only needed a 1000 watts. I may have to get the Honda to
run all this. Once the Cutlass bearing is done we can go in. I hope
to get over there this week end. With all you poor people. Beside me is
a 100 foot something or other. It must draw 18 feet.
Sunday it took me an hour and a half to get three screws in
the water pump. I could not get them to line up. I did not want to force
it and strip it. I could kill Sherwood!
When is the Air Show?

Bill,
Especially since I have met you a few times I enjoy ALL your contributions
to this list. I especially like your replies to some, like me, who has
screwed up by putting fuel in my port water tank and having 5 gallons of
fuel in my bilge ,since I didn't correctly change our primary fuel filter.
Your usual reply is "Don't ask me how I know", etc etc. We all realize how
you know.
Its great to have you as a member
When does Magic III come over to Wickford? Perhaps I can get the Blue Angels
to welcome you again??

That's me. Although for the record I make fun of myself frequently . For
example Miller screw up no 32. I do miss Jon in Greenport. I gave it to
him and he gave it right back. In good fun. I hope he has fair sailing.

Veronique and Frederick:
Welcome to the wonderful world of the C36. You will find that this list is a
great place to ask questions and sometimes get more answers that you need
but still a great place.
Also, we have budding comedians here who will take any opportunity to crack
a joke at your expense. (you guys know who you are). Oh well, as I said,
welcome to the list.

We bought some of the silver faced bubble wrap that is used for insulation.
It is very easy to cut with scissors and once cut, will press fit into the
windows from the inside. No light will come through. We also have some cut
for the overhead hatches to keep the light out while we are gone to prevent
sun damage on the fabrics and wood. It lasts several years, then just
replace with a new piece. No glue is needed, it just presses in and stays
Any hardware store will sell a roll of the stuff for under $10 When the a/c
is on, it also helps keep the boat cool.

Hello all,
We own a 1989 Catalina 36, "Mistral".
We got the boat last October and have working on her since.
Ou 9-year old son has already claimed the forward cabin- smart boy!
My husband and I sleep in the aft cabin.
With summer almost here, it is difficult to sleep in the morning with the
light coming in through all three small windows in the cabin.
The boat did not come with covers for said-windows, unfortunately. Same
problem in the head.
Does anyone know where I could find those?
Thank you all!
