Paul,
I have had recent experience with removing and replacing the heat exchanger.
But first, if you suspect this may be the issue, it's very easy to remove the round end plates off both ends to check inside.
When replacing, each has two gaskets, one large one the size of the round end cap, the other a small o-ring to seal the bolt- this ring goes on the inside of the plate I think, check while removing yours.
If you have to remove it, it's not hard, less than an hour to undo the hoses and remove the clamps that hold it.
Refer to Fred J's email about two weeks ago how he held the two-stiff- holding straps to get the bold started. I did the exact same thing a year ago!
Good recommendation.
But one thing, if the H/E (heat exchanger is the problem, wouldn't one end by hot to the touch? Tom S?
Attached is a photo of what one should look like looking down the axis (more or less) of a clean H/E.
AND.... a little photo-write up I did about the pencil zinc which shows crud before having it cleaned

Subject: [C36IA] engine temp #2
the leaking 'water' was in the pan/tray below the oil pan and engine and not in the oil (no evidence of water in the oil, no froth).
green coolant overflow level normal in cockpit locker. thru hull open, strainer clean, water splashing out exhaust.
i am thinking thermostat or heat exchanger. question is, how to i trouble shoot to isolate the problem?
and
if it is the heat exchanger, how do i 'clean' or if needed, replace?
