One way to test the thermostat is to remove it and put in a pan of water on
your stove. Heat the water and watch to see if it opens fully.  Use an
instant read thermometer to check the opening temp.  Of course, if you've
gone to all that trouble, you could just replace it.

the leaking 'water' was in the pan/tray below the oil pan and engine and not
in the oil (no evidence of water in the oil, no froth).

 

green coolant overflow level normal in cockpit locker.  thru hull open,
strainer clean, water splashing out exhaust.

 

i am thinking thermostat or heat exchanger.  question is, how to i trouble
shoot to isolate the problem?

 

and

 

if it is the heat exchanger, how do i 'clean' or if needed, replace?
