By in the engine sump do you mean the oil pan? So the Oil is medium brown and probably a little frothy? If so you have water in the oil. Unless someone accidentally added water to the engine you have a leak from the coolant to the oil. This is not good! More than likely this is from a bad head gasket. You definitely do not want to run the engine this way.

Have you checked the coolant level? I'd guess it's low and that's why you overheated.

Is your oil level high? Again, I'd guess it is but the coolant may also have boiled out.

Steve

Subject: [C36IA] engine temp #2

i too have an engine temp issue. last night after only 5 minutes of motoring my overheat alarm came on. the temp gauge pegged at 220. we shut the engine down and took off the engine cover. there we found medium brown liquid (color of dark beer and the consistence of water) in the engine sump and a very hot engine. couldn't tell where the 'water' was coming from.

after a few minutes i restarted the engine and found that warm, not hot, water was coming out the exhaust at about the normal rate. i put my hand on the heat exchanger and it felt 'cool', maybe 'warm', but not 'hot'.

question: what is the trouble shooting sequence for these symptoms?

thank you all!
