actually, we sailed under the bridge (generally not allowed) and out  
to the course.  we had 15kt+ wind, good for the catalina 36, and  
placed 2nd out of 40 boats!  the start was crazy scary.  had to call a  
friend to tow us back to the dock in the whaler after the barbecue.   
long night.

i too have an engine temp issue.  last night after only 5 minutes of  
motoring my overheat alarm came on.  the temp gauge pegged at 220. we  
shut the engine down and took off the engine cover.  there we found  
medium brown liquid (color of dark beer and the consistence of water)  
in the engine sump and a very hot engine.  couldn't tell where the  
'water' was coming from.

after a few minutes i restarted the engine and found that warm, not  
hot, water was coming out the exhaust at about the normal rate.  i put  
my hand on the heat exchanger and it felt 'cool', maybe 'warm', but  
not 'hot'.

question:  what is the trouble shooting sequence for these symptoms?
