Replacement Galley Sink

The previous owners of our recently acquired 2001 C36 MKII decided to replace the double stainless sink with a single sink with draining board and increase the drawer space below.

As the new single bowl sink measures (590mm length x 370mm width x 125mm depth - or 23.23" x 14.57" x 4.92") the previous owners had to build a teak frame to sit the sink onto as it was too small for the existing cut out.

The result is a shallow sink which splashes every where with a draining board that is all but useless under way as everything just slides off. It does not help that they threw the original sink out!

Could someone please tell me the dimensions of an original fitment double stainless sink and if anyone just happens to know of one lying around which I could purchase, that would be even better.

See if you can locate a boat yard online that is in Houston, Texas - Gulfport, Misssissippi or New Orleans, Louisianna. I am sure they will have a sink to match the dimensions you need. There were lots of sailboats destroyed in by Katrina and Rita.

We replaced the original double sink a few years ago. That old double deep sink idea is from long ago, when there was usually a salt water pump to one side. The flimsy stoppers were a PITA and we wanted a sink you could lay a dinner plate flat in, to hold more stuff, and maybe use less water. We settled on a round sink from Regal, about 16" in diameter and about 8" deep. It had a standard household basket and strainer, which was easily fitted to the existing drain hose. After removing the original (which has since been sold), I got a piece of Corian and cut and finished it to place over the hole, extending about two inches further on either side athwartships. The colour was "Sanded Sahara" I believe and it matched the original almost perfectly. I just glued it onto the existing counter with 3m 4200. It stands proud of the original top by about a half inch. Although it is an undermount sink, it was very well finished and a much heavier guage than the original, so we just dropped it into a hole cut into the new Corian and fixed it with 3M 4200, then siliconed along the edges to finish. I bored a smaller hole on new counter just foward and to port of the new sink for the original faucet, which had the advantage of moving it off the centerline of the boat a little, so it's more out of the way. The new sink is slightly shallower (I think the factory sink is 9") and sits on a counter about an inch higher than the original. This means the drain is about two inches higher than the original, and is less tortuous, so it drains much better, and is easier to plunge when blocked. The new one is great, holds lots of dishes until you can get around to them after anchoring, drains much better, allows us to wash dishes in about 3" of water, is big enough to accommodate pots and pans, and I can replace the stopper with a $3 item from anywhere. I even made a plastic cover for it so we have much more usable counter space, when it's covered. The boat is 800 miles away, or I'd try and figure out how to post pictures.

We have a couple different double deep sinks, One that I think may work the best measures 25" x 17" (outer flange) and takes a little smaller cut out. This may be very close to (or the same as) the original sink in your 36. If you would like to check that dimension and let me knos we can go from there......

I happen to have in my hot little hands the very sink that you require. It is, indeed, 25" X 17" edge to edge with one hole for the faucet pre-drilled. The top edges are brushed stainless and the two bowls are beautifully polished stainless, like a mirror. It is a Sterling sink (a Kohler company) and is model # 102120 . I purchased it from Catalina parts when they were still a few blocks away from me. My only problem is that on the 1991 MK I, the sink is bottom-mounted, ie. they mounted the sink to a hole in the liner and then dropped the countertop over it. So, to get it out, I must either rip off the entire countertop (no thanks) or carefully cut the sink out with a rotary tool and then drop in the new sink. I haven't summoned up the courage to start this job yet, but it sure is a pretty sink.

Are you just making me drool or do you intend to perhaps off load this sink in the future to another needy C36 owner :) ?

Once I get back down to the boat I will measure check out what the dimensions should be - will be a bit tricky as the previous owner has modified things quite a bit already.

Sorry Nigel, didn't mean to entice you. I just wanted to give you the exact model number. I notice that they have the same sink at Catalinadirect.com . My sink is old & pitted, so I will get to this job someday. I'm just a bit intimidated about cutting out the old sink as I described.
