I always wondered what the cost would be to ship from LA to, say, Houston, so that I could do the rest of a transcontinental relocation by sea.

I bet if you contact Catalina they could give you some good numbers, I bet they could put you in contact with the company they use as do I not think they have figured out how to FAX there products coast to coast. A company listed in an old marine directory lists nation wide transport, they are World Marine Transport 800-332-6287. I would guess they are hungry and fuel prices are down right now, good time to get a quote.

I moved Hilbre from Houston to Lake Mead (Las Vegas) three years ago $4,000. I am about to move her from Lake Mead to Long Beach, expecting to pay $2,800. I guess accross country would be somewhere $5-7K depending upon hauler.
I can tell you there is nothing designed to induce more tension in you than moving your boat anywhere especially long distance. I near died of a heart attack doing the move from Houston to Las Vegas. At least the LB move is short and if there were problems, easy for me to get wherever quickly.
Make sure you check on insurance.
